Shove Ha’penny

Take turns to shove your "ha'penny" as near as possible to the end of the table without it falling off.

How To Play

Step 1.
It is still possible to find specially made Shove Ha'penny (short for Half Penny, which used to be fairly large coins) boards around in fairs and antique shops. But actually, any smooth table top will do.
Step 2.
Each player has 3-5 matching coins, washers or small disks. In turn, they place one coin on the end of the table with 1/3 of the coin hanging over the edge.
Step 3.
Using the fleshy part of the palm in a vertical position, the coin is struck at just the right level of power to make it slide the length of the table as close to the far edge as possible, WITHOUT FALLING OFF THE END. Any coins falling off the edge are dead.
Step 4.
When each player has used all their coins, the nearest coin to the far edge scores 1 point. If the same player has the next nearest, that also scores 1 point, and so on until a different player's coin is next nearest when scoring ends.
Play up to 11 points per set and as many sets as you like.
